Nine Jazz classes at the Sutton School of Art

Every Saturdays from 1 pm to 3 pm at Sutton School of Art (79, Principal South St., Sutton).  Reservation required at the address below :

July 3  - History of jazz - prsented by Stanley Lake from the Homebrew Dixieland Band.  Tracing the roots of jazz from the era of slavery to present time. Demonstrations of instruments used in a Dixieland Band.

July 10 -  Improvised Dance «Omnia Fieri» - presented by Jean René (alto), Vicki Tansey (dance) and Émilie Girard-Charest (cello).  A combination of discussion and active participation in the practice of improvisation in movement and free jazz - Interactive.

 

 

July 17  - Singing jazz - presented by Ève Godin-Rheault.  A workshop to better understand your voice and to get the tools to be freer and more efficient in singing. We will explore the most important vocal structures for our work and apply this knowledge in a jazz piece learned in advance.

A one-day choir to better vocalize the jazz character of a piece.

July 24 - Percussions: Rhythms and passion - presented by Bruno Roy - The cool story of the invention of Drum Set. How it came about, who invented it, which country does it come from, what are the basic techniques to play it! That's what you'll learn in this fascinating and engaging workshop! Let's hit it! - Interactive.

 

July 31 - Communication in improvisation and technique of scat - presented by Almut Ellinghaus from Almut Ellinghaus Jazz Ensemble (piano, voice et trumpet).  How musicians communicate with each other during improvisation? Demonstration of the scat technique.

August 7 - Bluegrass Jazz - Where Bluegrass meets Jazz - presented by Danny Brown from Appellation Sutton Bluegrass Band.  Introduction and demonstration of bluegrass music and live performance. A little history, education and a lot of fun!

August 14 - Composing a song - presented by Claude Prud'homme from Jazz Heads (guitar, piano and trumpet).  Let’s create some songs! How to write a song with a jazz feel and a jazz groove - Interactive.

 

August 21 - Woodwinds and Jazz - presented by Richard Lamontagne from Winds of Change (oboe, flute, bass clarinet and bugle).  Wind instruments in a jazz setting Latin, Funk, Ballads plus original compositions. Explaning compositional objectives while composing for wind instruments.

August 28 - What is improvisation? - presented by Claude Prud'homme from Trio Yamaska (guitar, percussions and bass).  Improvisation in all its forms: between jazz styles, instruments, the soloist and spontaneous creation. A performance and conference that tries to answer the question: what is improvisation?
