He is a competent improvisor with a soulful approach, taking influence from the masters of Black American Music and stylists of the instrument such as Kenny Dorham and Donald Byrd all the way to Roy Hargrove and Ambrose Akinmusire. He has been mentored by some of the finest musicians of both the Montreal and the NYC jazz scene. A graduate of the Schulich School of Music, McGill University.<\/p>\n<p>Montreal guitarist Mathieu Soucy is \u201ca natural-born swinger\u201d (Jack Bowers, All About Jazz). His voice on the instrument \u201c[&#8230;] has one foot planted firmly in the tradition and one foot planted firmly in the now\u201d (Lyle Robinson, Jazz Guitar Life). He has released three albums\/EP as a leader: Say Listen (2025) featuring Rafael Salazar, An Afternoon in NDG (2024) and Recollecting (2022).
